The Whole Story

I am a Black Girl from Oakland and Stockton.

I grew up navigating the dualities of two vibrant cities in Northern California—Oakland and Stockton. Raised by a strong mother and grandmother, I learned the values of independence, faith, and community. They taught me that love isn’t just a feeling—it’s an action. Growing up, I saw injustice up close. I witnessed how systems often failed to uplift those who needed the most support. These experiences planted the seeds for my life’s work: creating spaces for healing, education, and liberation.

As a student, I was labeled “at-risk” by the very systems I now advocate to change. That label became my motivation. I’ve committed my life to uplifting those society often overlooks—because I know firsthand the power of resilience, community, and opportunity.

From the Classroom to Community Change

I was the first in my family to graduate from college, earning my Bachelor’s in Political Science and Education Policy and later a Master’s in Urban Education Policy and Administration from Loyola Marymount University.

My journey began as a classroom teacher, where I taught elementary through high school students in urban communities across Washington D.C., Atlanta, Oakland, and Stockton. My students and their stories became my purpose. Together, we affirmed what I’ve always believed: when students are supported and empowered, they can excel in any environment.

I transitioned from the classroom to innovative school design initiatives, contributing to programs like San Joaquin’s One.Alternative School Program, Oakland’s Design School X, and San Francisco’s New School. These experiences taught me how to build solutions from the ground up and to reimagine education in ways that prioritize equity and creativity.

Advocating for Change and Building Community

After losing my teenage brother, Da’Quan Blackwell, to tragedy, I founded the QuanWorld Collective. This organization is my tribute to him and a platform to advocate for student rights and create meaningful mentorship opportunities. Through QuanWorld, I have worked to amplify the voices of those too often silenced, ensuring that young people are not just seen, but celebrated.

Today, I serve as the Executive Director of Boost! West Oakland, where I lead transformative programs that uplift youth and families in my community. Whether it’s increasing access to educational opportunities, empowering families, or leading community-building initiatives, my focus is always on creating sustainable change.

Honors and Recognition

My work has been recognized locally and nationally. I was honored at BET’s BLACK GIRLS ROCK! for my commitment to community empowerment and by Procter & Gamble’s My Black is Beautiful for my vision of equity and justice. I’ve also contributed to Sheryl Sandberg’s best-selling book, Lean In for Graduates, and traveled the country as a motivational speaker to inspire women, educators, and change-makers.

A Comittment to Healing and Coaching

In addition to my work in education, I am a Master Certified Professional and Life Coach, dedicated to facilitating healing spaces for individuals, organizations, and support groups. Whether coaching executives, leading DEI initiatives, or holding space for grief and resilience, I center humanity, liberation, and transformation. I believe in the power of personal and collective healing to drive sustainable growth and change.

The Future is About Empowerment

I am proud to have served as a Surge Fellow, Leadership for Educational Equity Fellow, and as part of Oakland Unified School District’s African American Female Excellence initiative. Each role has furthered my understanding of how to empower communities and amplify voices.

Outside of work, I find joy in motherhood and spending time with my daughter, Mylicia. She reminds me daily of why this work matters. I look forward to partnering with you to uncover your inner power, nurture your growth, and reclaim the parts of yourself that deserve to shine. Together, we can create a path toward healing, liberation, and lasting impact.
